Recording, Mixing, Mastering, Tape Transfer, Tube Amp and Tape Machine Repair, and Custom Builds
Hello, My name is Jim, my pronouns are they/them. This is my audio engineering and electronics design/repair gig.
I strive to get your gear and/or music back into your hands as quickly as professionally possible. I limit myself to how many machines/projects I will take on at one time. If my schedule is full, I will have you on a queue to drop off, mail-in, or email the machine or material involved. I do this to keep a tidy home and workspace which provides me better focus and efficiency at working on your stuff.
I try as hard as I can to provide the customer with a reasonable price. Please keep in mind that I am dealing with very high voltages when I am doing tube amp repairs and builds, sometimes over 750 volts! That is a very real risk... BUT I am committed to helping people out and if you are on a budget and really need something... just ask we can probably work something out.
I solemnly swear to always try and source the highest quality and true-to-spec exact replacement parts I can possibly find on all repairs. I will also tell you of worthwhile upgrade parts when applicable.
Tube Amps ONLY! If you need a solid state amp repaired, I can refer you to the person I know. All prices are for labor only. Cost of parts used is dependent on the amplifier and the requested service.
I check for loose and dirty pots, jacks, sockets, and connectors. I check to see if there are any broken or cold solder joints. I test the microphonics of tubes.
I do all the same of the basic diagnostic and in addition I check the bias and component values for every single component in the amp and compare that data to the amplifiers schematic for cross reference, giving you an exact readout of exactly which components are bad or drifting out of spec. I then give you a list of the parts that need to be repaired. The list will prioritize safety, and also include any other component necessary for better performance.
Price per hour after diagnostic.
I replace all electrolytic filter capacitors and diagnose the integrity of the tone and coupling capacitors.
I check the bias and integrity of your power tubes. I then adjust the bias to be at the power tubes optimum or specifically requested operating point.
If I see it, It's going to be removed. I don't want anyone getting hurt. If you have a vintage amp with a death cap I will gladly remove it for you free of charge. If you don't know if it has a deathcap I will also be happy to take a look for you.
Mods start at $50.00 and that covers most popular amplifier mods. For very complex mods, the price will go up depending on what is requested. For example, adding a reverb circuit is more difficult and more expensive than changing the tone stack capacitors. If you want me to mod your amp while I'm repairing it will be $50.00 surcharge on top of my hourly rate.
Electric Instruments only. I'm not a woodworker or luthier.
